Alaria esculenta — Brown Algae

Alaria esculenta is the North Atlantic equivalent of wakame — one of the most widely consumed and studied sea vegetables in the world. While Pacific wakame (Undaria pinnatifida) is well known in Japanese cuisine, Alaria esculenta grows wild along the cold rocky coastlines of the North Atlantic and shares many of the same remarkable nutritional properties. It has a long history of traditional consumption in Ireland, Scotland, Iceland, and coastal North America, where it was eaten both as food and used in traditional medicine.

Alaria is one of the most nutritionally complex sea vegetables in our seaweed blend. Its fucoidan content is particularly high, and its spectrum of vitamins and minerals — including folate, calcium, and magnesium — makes it especially nutritionally valuable.
