Palmaria palmata — Red Algae

Dulse is a species of red algae with a deep burgundy-red color that grows along the rocky coastlines of the North Atlantic and North Pacific. It has one of the longest documented histories of human consumption of any sea vegetable — records of dulse being eaten in Iceland and Ireland date back over 1,400 years. In Iceland it is still consumed today as a common snack food. Along the coastlines of Ireland, Scotland, Canada, and the northeastern United States, dulse has been a traditional food source for centuries — eaten dried as a snack, cooked as a vegetable, and used as a seasoning.
