Laver

Porphyra umbilicalis — Red Algae

Laver is the North Atlantic species of the Porphyra family — the same genus as the nori used to wrap sushi in Japanese cuisine. While Pacific nori (Porphyra yezoensis) is the most commercially familiar form, Atlantic laver (Porphyra umbilicalis) grows wild along the rocky coastlines of Wales, Ireland, Scotland, and the northeastern Atlantic coast and has been consumed as a traditional food in these regions for well over a thousand years.

Laver is one of the most nutritionally remarkable sea vegetables in our blend. It is the primary contributor of Vitamin B12 in our seaweed blend — a nutrient that is exceptionally rare in plant-based foods — and it provides a complete protein profile alongside its exceptional mineral and vitamin content. For plant-based consumers, laver represents one of the most significant nutritional advantages of our seaweed blend.

What It's Known For

Vitamin B12 — The Rare Plant-Based Source

Laver is known as one of the most significant plant-based sources of Vitamin B12 — a nutrient that is otherwise found almost exclusively in animal products, making it one of the most persistent nutritional challenges for plant-based eaters. Research shows B12 is essential for myelin sheath maintenance — the protective coating around nerve fibers that determines the speed and efficiency of neural signal transmission. Studies show B12 supports red blood cell production, DNA synthesis, cognitive function, energy metabolism, and mood stability. B12 deficiency is directly linked to nerve damage, memory problems, fatigue, depression, and in severe cases irreversible neurological damage. Laver provides B12 in a natural whole-food context alongside the cofactors that support its absorption.

Complete Protein

Laver is known for its relatively high protein content among sea vegetables, providing all essential amino acids in bioavailable whole-food form. Research shows complete protein is essential for muscle synthesis and repair, enzyme and hormone production, immune function, and the maintenance of every tissue in the body. The amino acid profile of laver complements the mineral-dense but lower-protein seaweeds in our blend.

Chlorophyll and Detoxification Support

Laver has a high chlorophyll content that research supports for natural detoxification. Studies show chlorophyll supports the body's natural processes for binding and eliminating environmental toxins, and it contributes to healthy blood formation through its structural relationship to hemoglobin. Chlorophyll is also known for its deodorizing properties and its support of digestive health.

Iron and Energy Support

Laver provides meaningful iron in whole-food form — contributing to the iron complex naturally present across multiple seaweeds in our blend. Research shows iron supports oxygen delivery throughout the body, immune cell function, and the energy metabolism that determines physical and cognitive endurance.

Iodine and Thyroid Support

Like other seaweeds in our blend, laver contributes natural iodine for thyroid support. Its contribution to the combined iodine complex of our seaweed blend helps ensure comprehensive thyroid mineral support across the full seaweed base.

Antioxidant Support

Laver contains natural antioxidant compounds including R-phycoerythrin and polyphenols that research supports for protecting cells from oxidative stress. Studies show these antioxidants contribute to the overall antioxidant capacity of our seaweed blend, supporting cellular protection across all formula applications.
