Rockweed

Ascophyllum nodosum — Brown Algae

Rockweed — known scientifically as Ascophyllum nodosum — is one of the most abundant and ecologically significant sea vegetables along the North Atlantic coastline. It grows attached to rocks in the intertidal zone, where it is alternately submerged by tides and exposed to air — an environment that makes it exceptionally resilient and nutritionally dense. It is one of the most studied seaweeds in marine biology and agricultural science, and is increasingly researched in nutritional science for its unique bioactive compound profile.

Rockweed has the longest lifespan of any of the seaweeds in our blend — individual plants can live for over 20 years, accumulating a rich mineral and bioactive compound profile over time. It is particularly valued for its high fucoidan content, its exceptional mineral density, and its natural prebiotic fiber that research shows supports beneficial gut bacteria populations

What It's Known For

Exceptional Mineral Density

Rockweed is known for one of the broadest mineral spectrums of any sea vegetable. Research shows it provides significant concentrations of iodine, calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, manganese, and a wide array of trace minerals in naturally bioavailable whole-food form. The mineral richness of rockweed reflects its long lifespan and its intertidal habitat — constantly bathed in mineral-rich seawater and exposed to coastal air. This mineral density makes rockweed a meaningful contributor to the 92+ mineral complex naturally present in our seaweed blend.

Fucoidan and Immune Support

Rockweed contains significant levels of fucoidan — the sulfated polysaccharide found in brown seaweeds that research supports for immune modulation, anti-inflammatory activity, and cardiovascular health. Studies show fucoidan supports natural killer cell activation, macrophage activity, and a healthy inflammatory response. The fucoidan from rockweed works synergistically with the fucoidan naturally present in bladderwrack, kelp, and Alaria in our seaweed blend.

Prebiotic Fiber and Gut Health Support

Rockweed is known for its natural prebiotic fiber content — particularly its alginic acid, fucoidan, and laminarin polysaccharides that research shows resist digestion in the small intestine and arrive intact in the colon where they feed and support beneficial gut bacteria. Studies show prebiotic fibers from seaweeds selectively support Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species — the two most important families of beneficial gut bacteria associated with healthy digestion, immune function, and metabolic health.

Antioxidant Protection

Rockweed contains phlorotannins — a class of polyphenol antioxidants unique to brown seaweeds that are not found in any land plant. Research shows phlorotannins provide potent antioxidant protection against free radical damage, support a healthy inflammatory response, and may support the body's natural cellular protective mechanisms. Studies show the phlorotannin content of Ascophyllum nodosum is among the highest of any brown seaweed.

Thyroid and Metabolic Support

Like all brown seaweeds in our blend, rockweed provides natural iodine for thyroid function support. Its contribution to the combined iodine complex of our seaweed blend ensures comprehensive thyroid mineral support from multiple whole-food sources.

Cardiovascular Support

Research supports rockweed for cardiovascular health through its fucoidan content — studies show fucoidan supports healthy blood lipid levels, reduces platelet aggregation in blood vessels, and supports healthy endothelial function. Its natural potassium content also supports healthy blood pressure balance.
